In 1999, eight North Island brown kiwi were discovered in Ohope Scenic Reserve, representing the last of their local population. The Whakatane Kiwi Project was created to restore local kiwi numbers. Since then, the kiwi population in the Whakatane area has grown to over 350! Whakatane is now known as the Kiwi Capital of the World
