Supermarkets

Specialty grocers, not in All supermarkets. Select one to show it.

Before July 2026: New World, PAK'nSAVE and Woolworths only, from smaller samples. Shaded months had little collection.

Points marked “carried” had no new prices collected for that supermarket, so its last recorded prices stand in.

Updated 5 November 2026. Rebuilt nightly from Shoparound's recorded shelf prices.

Methodology

How it's calculated

Shelf prices, not specials

Every product we track counts, at its regular shelf price: the median across a chain's stores at the end of each week or month. Promotions are left out, so the index shows the underlying trend.

Each store against its own start

Each product's price is divided by its price in July 2026, or the store's first period if later. The index is the geometric mean of those ratios, times 100. Ratios above 3× or below a third are dropped as likely pack-size changes or errors. Monthly history back to January 2025 covers New World, PAK'nSAVE and Woolworths, measured the same way from smaller samples and joined at July 2026.

Supermarkets count equally

All supermarkets moves by the average change across the six chains, so the largest catalogue doesn't dominate. Specialty grocers are left out because their narrow ranges would pull it around.

Gaps are marked

When no new prices were collected for a store in a period, its last recorded prices stand in and the point is marked as carried.

Common questions

Price index FAQ

What does an index of 101 mean?

Shelf prices are about 1% higher than in the base period, which is set to 100 (July 2026 in the monthly view). An index of 99 would mean prices are about 1% lower.

Does a lower index mean a store is cheaper?

No. Each store is measured against its own earlier prices, so the index shows how fast prices are changing, not which store is cheapest. To compare stores, price your shopping list across supermarkets.

How is this different from the Stats NZ Food Price Index?

Stats NZ publishes a monthly Food Price Index from a fixed basket of food items, weighted by household spending. This index covers tens of thousands of supermarket products, updates nightly and breaks results down by store, but it is not weighted by spending.
