September look-back: Whanganui supermarket changed from SuperValue to FreshChoice
The retailer’s 22 September release described a refreshed store under local owner-operator Priya Patel, rather than an entirely new supermarket site.
A conversion announced in September
FreshChoice reported on 22 September 2026 that its Whanganui store had opened under the new banner the previous day, following a transformation from SuperValue. The announcement date and the opening date were therefore different.
This was a change to an existing supermarket. Counting it as a completely new grocery location would overstate what the release established.[1]
Local ownership continued
The retailer named Priya Patel as owner-operator and said she had taken ownership of the Whanganui store in late 2024. It described the conversion as bringing a refreshed format while retaining a local team.
FreshChoice also reported ongoing support for Kai Hub, Te Ora Hou and other local groups. It did not give donation totals.[1]
Opening offers are a snapshot
The September announcement included a meat-pack promotion and described fresh produce and tailored ranges. Those details belong to that release and should not be treated as a current offer or stock check.
A different banner and refreshed layout do not establish that the store is the cheapest place for every household to shop.[1]
