What the Commission reported in June

The Commerce Commission released its third Annual Grocery Report on 2 June 2026. It said the major supermarkets retained more than 80% of the national retail market.

The report primarily covered the 2025 financial year. The Commission described margins and profitability as relatively flat, alongside higher retail prices. These are findings from that reporting period.[1]

Smaller retailers were expanding

The Commission also reported new stores and expanding specialty grocers, particularly in Auckland. It said some greengrocers and butchers were broadening their ranges.

That helps explain why a useful price comparison may include retailers beyond the major supermarket chains. It does not establish that every smaller retailer has a lower price.[1]
